once the simulation has been completed, students will have a complete physical 3d model of an amputee lower limb with hard and soft tissues that they can manipulate to generate gait patterns, leg movement and joint angles, again like a real amputee. students can also create a low-cost, disposable plaster cast or perform soft tissue palpation activities that would otherwise be difficult to undertake in a high-risk patient. by demonstrating student learning in real time to volunteer amputee clinicians, simulated amputated limb models are again a safe, efficient, low-cost, and effective method of measuring and teaching student performance in a clinical setting that will further challenge the fundamental skills and knowledge of students.

while most research studies of this nature use volunteers that are able to understand the intent of the experiment and to consent to participate, simulations can be used in a similar fashion with volunteers that may have only a limited understanding of what is being asked of them. the models do not need to understand and can be used alongside a discussion between the simulators and the volunteers of what is going on and why the simulation is taking place. simulation of an amputees gait in low-fidelity versions might be appropriate in educational settings if adequate debriefing takes place afterwards.
unfortunately, as previously mentioned, there are some limitations to the 3d models that will be created by some students. it is important that these limitations be clearly identified and documented to ensure that each model is reported accurately and that it supports the focus of the teaching and assessment activities. there is also a need for quality control to be carried out to ensure the accuracy of the models produced. it may be possible for some students to produce models of a very high quality. as the majority of students produce models of an acceptable standard, the potential of quality control of the models should be considered, as should the potential for comparing models with other students or with their own previous models. the models may be easily manipulated and changed to illustrate concepts to clinicians and educators.
